Brightlingsea, a Cinque Port town of around 8000 population, is located on the unspoilt north east Essex coast around 70 miles from London.
A quiet town with historical interest, it is surrounded by classic Essex mudflats and marshes, many of which are Sites of Special Interest. A walk from the Hard, where children like to go "crabbing" at high tide, along the Promenade and beside the old railway line will leave you feeling invigorated and ready to tackle anything! There is wildlife to see alongside the creeks and salt marshes and the views across the water are breathtaking.
The beach has a Rural Beach Award and there is an open air swimming pool and a children's paddling pool near Bateman's Tower.
The town was a busy fishing port for many years and you can still see fishing smacks and Thames barges racing in late summer. Water sports take place during the year at the local Yacht Club and Sailing club.
All Saint's Church was built c. 1250 and has a particularly fine tower. Inside there is possibly a unique set of memorial tiles for those lost at sea.
The town has won many "In Bloom" prizes, including a Silver in 2002 in the "National" Best Small Town Category. For more information on Brightlingsea visit: www.brightlingsea-town.co.uk.
